Viral video clips appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Recent examples involve:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
