A two-month voyage circling the Land Down Under has been cancelled following the death of an elderly lady who was left behind by the cruise liner on a remote island.

The passenger had been hiking on the remote island with other travelers from the cruise ship, but broke off from the excursion for a rest. The liner left without her and returned later that day after the crew discovered the lady was not present.

An extensive hunt located her remains the subsequent day.

Authorities are looking into the tragedy, in coordination with police and the state coroner.

Head of the cruise operator said that travelers and personnel on the ship were notified that the remainder of the journey had been terminated due to the "sad loss and previous technical problems".

Via official communication, he added that passengers would be given a full refund, and said the operator was working "to organize the homeward trips of the passengers via chartered flights".

Authorities also issued an revised announcement, and said they had "delivered a directive to the Master" banning any further travelers from entering the vessel.

The official said that they would inspect the liner in Cairns upon its return.

Sequence of Occurrences

The vessel initially left the coastal city on October 24th, and was merely two days into the expedition at the moment of the senior passenger's passing. The remote island was the opening port on the itinerary.

Travelers on the ship - who generally pay tens of thousands of money to participate in the expedition - were transported there for a daily excursion with the possibility of trekking or snorkelling.

Family Reaction

The child of the elderly passenger said that her family was "shocked and grieved that the ship left the location after an organised tour without my mother".

Via her announcement, she described her mother as an "energetic elderly person" who was a participant of a hiking organization.

"According to scant details we have been told, it looks that there was a failure of responsibility and basic judgment," she said.

She added that she wished the inquiry would be able to identify what "the organization should have performed that might have protected Mother's existence".

"Based on information from the investigators that it was a exceptionally warm afternoon, and mum became unwell on the uphill trek," she stated.

"She was asked her to head down, unescorted. Then the vessel sailed away, seemingly without conducting a passenger count.

"At some stage in that sequence, or shortly after, she died, without company."

Company Position

In a statement, the Head verified that the company was "cooperating fully with authorities to aid their examination".

He stated that the company was "very regretful that this has happened" and had provided its complete assistance to the family.

Shipping Sector Standards

The vessel caters for up to a hundred twenty travelers with nearly fifty personnel, according to corporate details. It was specifically designed to access remote areas of the nation's shoreline and is outfitted with "auxiliary vessels" - small boats used to take passengers on land visits.

Events such as this are rare, and passenger vessels have protocols to document which passengers are getting on or getting off, according to industry experts.

"Sneaking ashore or [back] on the ship simply isn't an option," a specialist commented.

Shipping companies consider these processes extremely carefully and have "clever tech in place to stop such events from occurring," the expert further stated.

"This seems to be probably a surprising - and tragic - one-off."
