The artist donates twenty-five thousand pounds award winnings to independent concert halls

The artist receiving the award in the North East
Sam Fender won the prestigious award in October in Newcastle

The star has given the entirety of his £25,000 Mercury Prize prize money to the trust for venues, which operates to preserve the UK's grassroots live music spots.

He was presented with the cheque on mid-October as his latest record People Watching was chosen as the outstanding release of the last 12 months.

He has chosen to hand the money over to the MVT, in recognition of the crucial part small stages fulfilled in his early career.

"As an artist would not have achieved this success if it hadn't been for all the gigs I did around the North East, and further afield, when I was beginning," said Sam Fender. "These locations are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – roughly 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

Recently, well-known musicians such as Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its efforts to support the industry, by including a modest fee to their ticket prices, which supports smaller concert halls.

He also joined in, raising over £100k on his recent tour to help 38 grassroots venues across the UK.

These funds helped venues that were dealing with imminent closure due to challenges caused by flooding, blazes and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Other venues were granted monetary aid in modernizing infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that helped artists and fans.

"The idea that money from concerts in big venues helps the smaller venues, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just common sense," the star has commented.

Fender is far from the only musician to donate his honor prize money to charitable organizations.

When Pulp received the award in the mid-90s for their album the album, vocalist the singer stated that the band would contribute their winnings to the organization the charity.

That year, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite split her prize among multiple charities, including the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I donated a £1,000 to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was growing up and they needed new equipment," Ms Dynamite explained to a publication.

In recent years, they gave their winnings to the community center that nurtured their group, in addition to other grassroots music organisations.

Additionally winners that year they gave their winnings to a MS organization after a friend was identified with the disease.

"Winning was quite enough," stated vocalist the singer. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't require the extra, because we had the main prize. So our winning touched somebody else's life."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had saved several grassroots venues in that region, by transferring them to local control.

The first in Southampton and the other in Bristol were acquired under the public acquisition program, which is backed by a national body and music fans who buy "ownership units" in the properties.
