Trump's Regime of Retribution and Reward

The ex-president's voracious desire for retribution has rapidly morphed into a organized framework. During the twelve months, the president's rage and whims have taken on the form of official policies in ways comparable to historical authoritarian regimes. Government figures who resist his demands are promptly removed and replaced by loyalists. Critical leaders who confront him risk prosecution, trial and penalties. Opponents have been labeled under presidential orders as “anti-American”, “anti-Christian” and “against free markets”, and menaced with prosecution as “security threats”.

The Justice System Transformed

Every instance involving legal action of critics and immunity for his allies displays its own distinct qualities. But, notwithstanding their particular nature, they represent examples of what has developed as a calculated method. Those incidents are far from isolated. Trump's purge of DoJ lawyers and FBI officials, alongside his placement of devotees in high-level roles, began swiftly, quickly took on a consistency, and has now been formed into a system. DoJ and the Federal Bureau have been transformed into ideological agencies under Trump's explicit orders to carry out his directives. Unfairness has been rendered routine. It represents the retribution system.

Leadership is more concerned with punishing the President's perceived adversaries than they are with safeguarding our national security.

Within the System

The foundation of this system has been revealed in the court filing of multiple ex- high-ranking Federal Bureau agents submitted in late summer in the federal court in Washington against top official a senior appointee and justice department head another official for illegal termination in “a campaign of retribution against Plaintiffs for what the accused deemed to be a failure to exhibit sufficient allegiance”. The document states that Brian Driscoll, the ex- interim leader, recounts a discussion in which Patel “publicly acknowledged the illegality of his behavior”.

He had sought to shield law enforcement officers from being fired, the filing claims. He advised him that “they” – interpreted by him to be the White House and justice department – had ordered him to fire everyone who they identified as having been involved in a legal probe against Trump. The complaint continues: “He explained that he had to dismiss the personnel his bosses told him to remove, because his ability to keep his own role relied on the dismissal of the personnel who were involved in matters involving the President. Patel commented that there was nothing he or Driscoll could do to prevent these or any other dismissals, because ‘the FBI attempted to incarcerate the President in jail and he remembers.’” When Driscoll told him he was breaking the agency's own internal rules, he allegedly said “he understood that and he knew the character of the summary firings were almost certainly unlawful”.

Broad Consequences

Following his alleged admission to the official, the DoJ and the law enforcement agency have been gutted and redirected for Trump's revenge apparatus. Six of the agency's high-ranking agents were terminated or forced out in the first days of the administration. About 4,500 professional attorneys at the justice department have taken a “voluntary departure plan”. A minimum of several federal prosecutors, such as those in the southern district of New York, resigned in dissent over what they viewed as partisan influence in dropping the corruption case against the New York City mayor, a political figure, in exchange for his assistance with Trump's federal agency detentions of migrants. The public integrity section of the justice department, which manages ethical violations, has been diminished to two attorneys. The equality section has been devastated: 70% of its employees has left. 33% of top officials at the department have left. The division enforcing environmental law has seen departures of a majority its management.

Rewards and Sanctions

Concerning the Adams case, the acting US attorney for the NY office, she, stepped down in protest against what she characterized as the “exchange”. Tom Homan, Trump's “enforcement chief,” was present as the enforcer with him on Fox News to announce: “If he doesn't come through, I will return in the city.”. And, a former official, previously the acting deputy attorney general and a ex-lawyer, who negotiated the deal, was granted an court role, a possible springboard to the supreme court.

His protection for offenses perpetrated while in office, awarded by the unprecedented ruling of the Republican majority on the highest court, thus blocking his legal action over the January 6 insurrection and preserving his electoral prospects for the presidential race, is the basis on which he stands to defend his loyalists. With such immunity, he has been empowered to enable wrongdoing. The impact of the court judgment permeates his government and the GOP thoroughly. The legal case has metastasized.
