New research reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People buying such medications should be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
